The short answer
There are three practical ways to buy direct from farms near Ottawa: a CSA share booked before the season, a farmers' market stall, or an on-farm shop. Savour Ottawa's CSA Farm Guide lists the farms taking shares; the Ottawa Farmers' Market runs five market locations across the city.
- CSA is the earliest commitment You buy a share of the season before planting and collect it in instalments. Sign-ups circulate in late winter and early spring, not in July.
- Two directories do the work Savour Ottawa's CSA Farm Guide for shares, and its Buy Local Food Guide for producers, retailers and processors more broadly.
- One market runs year-round The Lansdowne market trades Sundays 9 AM to 3 PM all year; the other four Ottawa Farmers' Market locations run May to October.
- Visiting is not the same as buying Saunders Farm, The Log Farm and Madahoki Farm are agritourism destinations with shops attached — a good day out, a different errand from a weekly vegetable box.
- The farms are mostly outside the city line Ottawa's markets sit inside the boundary; the farms supplying them generally do not. Any city-limits map will under-count the growers.

SourceSearch for farms near Ottawa and you mostly get days out: corn mazes, pumpkin patches, animal barns. Those are real places and they are worth visiting, but they answer a different question from the one most people are asking, which is simpler — where do I buy food straight from the person who grew it, on a schedule that works all season?
Where can I buy directly from farms near Ottawa?
Start with Savour Ottawa, a regional initiative that began in 2007 as a collaboration involving Just Food, Ottawa Tourism and two City of Ottawa offices, and is funded on an ongoing basis by the City's Rural Affairs department. Its Buy Local Food Guide started life as a printed map in 2005 and is now an online directory covering producers, retailers, microprocessors, food service and breweries, wineries and cideries. Listing is free for the businesses, which is why the directory runs deeper than most tourism lists.
From there the choice is really about commitment and timing. A CSA share ties you to one farm for a season and rewards you with the best of what it grows. A market stall costs you nothing in advance and lets you buy across a dozen growers in one trip. An on-farm shop is the oldest arrangement of all — you drive out, and you buy what is there.

What CSA programs and farm stands operate near Ottawa?
Savour Ottawa's CSA Farm Guide is the working list — roughly forty farms, most of them in the Ottawa region with a few in the Kingston area. Entries include 1818 Farm and Cidery, Agricola Cooperative Farm, Veghead Farm, Ferme Pleine Lune and Salt of the Earth Farm. The guide describes the arrangement in the farmers' own terms: eaters enter into an agreement of purchase with the grower before the season starts, the farm gets a guaranteed market, and the eater gets food as it becomes available.
Share types vary more than newcomers expect. Weekly or bi-weekly vegetable boxes come in full, half, flex and sampler sizes. There are salad subscriptions, grass-fed beef and pastured pork shares, and egg shares. Looser “food box” programs let you pay weekly instead of committing to a whole season and choose more of what goes in. Pickup might be at the farm, at a market stall, at a neighbourhood or workplace drop point, or delivered to your door for a fee. Most farms run summer and autumn; Bryson Farms and Ferme Pleine Lune are listed as operating year-round.
If you would rather not commit, the Ottawa Farmers' Market runs five locations. Lansdowne at Aberdeen Square trades Sundays, 9 AM to 3 PM, year-round. The seasonal four run May to October: Main Street at Grande Allee Park on Saturdays 9 AM to 2 PM, Westboro at Byron Linear Park on Saturdays 9 AM to 3 PM, Orleans at the Ray Friel complex on Thursdays 11 AM to 4 PM, and Barrhaven at Nepean Woods on Sundays 10 AM to 2 PM. The organisation states that produce comes direct from farm to family in 100 kilometres or less, and that other goods are bought from the hands that made them. Ottawa also has independent markets — the ByWard Market, the Parkdale Market and the Ottawa Organic Farmers' Market among them — each with its own schedule.
How does Food Web's asset map track farms and markets around Ottawa?
Drawn on the city boundary, Ottawa's mapped food landscape is dominated by grocery retail — supermarkets, independent and international grocers, bakeries — followed by a substantial layer of food banks and community food organisations. The farmers' markets are all there. The farms are almost entirely absent.

Only a handful of growing operations sit inside that frame — a microgreens grower, an apiary, a poultry and egg operation. That is not a failure of the data so much as the shape of the question: “farms near Ottawa” is, almost by definition, about land outside the city. The farms feeding those market stalls are in Carleton County, the Ottawa Valley and across the river in the Outaouais, and a map clipped to the municipal boundary will never show them.
The city-level breakdown lives on the Ottawa food map page, and other cities get the same treatment in our food maps collection. The fix for the boundary problem is to stop using the boundary: draw a radius instead.

What about the farms you visit rather than buy from?
They are worth knowing on their own terms. Saunders Farm is an agritourism destination built around seasonal events — Tulipfest, the corn maze, PumpkinFest, FrightFest — with a Farmshop selling cider and farm-to-table goods in person. The Log Farm opens March to October for animal visits, wagon rides and a pumpkin patch, and runs a farm shop plus a monthly farmers market from May through October. Madahoki Farm on West Hunt Club Road is the home of Indigenous experiences and events, with an Indigenous Marketplace open Thursday to Sunday, 11 AM to 4 PM, a herd of Ojibwe Spirit Horses and its own farm products. None of these is a weekly grocery solution; all of them are a genuine afternoon.
And if you are reading this from the producer's side — a grower thinking about jam, a market vendor outgrowing a home kitchen — the bottleneck after the crop is nearly always inspected kitchen space. You can browse commercial kitchens on Food Web to see what licensed time costs by the hour before committing to a season of processing.
- What is the easiest way to buy direct from a farm near Ottawa?
- A farmers' market, because it needs no advance commitment. The Ottawa Farmers' Market's Lansdowne location runs Sundays 9 AM to 3 PM year-round, and four more locations trade May to October. For a whole season from one farm, a CSA share booked in late winter is the better arrangement.
- When do Ottawa-area CSA sign-ups open?
- There is no single deadline. Savour Ottawa's CSA Farm Guide lists each farm's own dates, and the guide circulates in late winter and early spring because the agreement is made before the season starts. Some farms show rolling online sign-ups instead.
- Are there working farms inside the City of Ottawa?
- A few, but very few. Food Web's map records only a handful of growing operations inside the city boundary — among them a microgreens grower, an apiary and a poultry and egg operation. The farms supplying the city's markets are mostly beyond the municipal line.
- Is Saunders Farm a place to buy produce?
- Not primarily. Saunders Farm is an agritourism destination with seasonal events and a Farmshop selling cider and farm-to-table items in person. For a regular supply of vegetables, a CSA share or a farmers' market stall is the right route.
