Membership rules are what keep a farmers market distinct from a general market. Quebec’s association of public markets, the AMPQ, requires that at least two-thirds of a member market’s merchants be producers, processors or agri-food artisans, that the market be run by a non-profit, co-operative or paramunicipal body, and that it recur at least four times over the summer. That shape — producer majority, non-profit organizer, a real season — is roughly what the label promises anywhere.
Scale is best described association by association: no active national farmers’ market association currently publishes a Canada-wide count. Farmers’ Markets Ontario, established in 1991, represents more than 180 markets across Ontario. The AMPQ brings together close to 150 public markets in Quebec. Farmers’ Markets of Nova Scotia, founded in 2004, has over 40 members across that province, and through its Nourishing Communities coupon program reports $1.5 million spent at local farmers’ market businesses, reaching more than 6,700 individuals. In British Columbia, markets belonging to the BC Association of Farmers’ Markets generated $232.9 million in annual economic impact, with shoppers spending an average of $42.50 per visit.
For a new food business the appeal is low entry cost, immediate feedback and a weekly deadline that forces a product to become repeatable. In some provinces markets are also where the narrow home-food allowances apply: Alberta permits low-risk home-prepared foods that do not require refrigeration to be sold from home, at special events and at farmers’ markets. Nova Scotia takes the other approach for anything beyond low-risk food — it must be prepared in a permitted establishment, and vendors without their own kitchen file a Permission to Use form for the one they borrow.
Markets are a channel, not the channel: Statistics Canada found that in 2020, 4,137 farms reported farmers’ markets as a direct sales channel out of 25,917 farms — 13.6% of Canadian farms — reporting direct sales at all, with farm stands and on-site stores more common still. That was a pandemic year, so treat it as a floor. The market is usually where a food business finds its ceiling, and the next step is a permitted kitchen. Find markets and kitchens near you.
