The short answer

Windsor's main outdoor market is the Downtown Windsor Farmers' Market, every Saturday from 9 am to 2 pm, running 28 March to 31 October in 2026. Outside that season The City Market on Walker Road trades indoors seven days a week, and Essex County adds the Amherstburg Farmers Market on Sundays through the summer.

  • Saturdays The Downtown Windsor Farmers' Market runs 9 am to 2 pm, 28 March to 31 October 2026.
  • Year-round The City Market, 1030 Walker Road, is indoors and open seven days a week.
  • Out in the county Amherstburg Farmers Market runs Sundays 12:30–4:30 pm in season, at GL Heritage Brewing on Howard Avenue.
  • Worth knowing Much of Essex County's direct selling happens at roadside farm stands rather than at markets.

For a region that grows as much food as Essex County does, a farmers market in Windsor is not the obvious centre of gravity you might expect. The city has one weekly outdoor market downtown, one indoor market hall that trades year-round, and a handful of seasonal county markets around it — and then a long tail of roadside stands that quietly handle a great deal of the direct selling. Knowing which of those you want saves a wasted Saturday.

What farmers markets operate in Windsor?

Two places in the city carry the word market and they are not the same kind of thing. The Downtown Windsor Farmers' Market is a seasonal outdoor producer market run by the Downtown Windsor Business Improvement Association, trading one morning a week. The City Market, at 1030 Walker Road, is a permanent indoor market hall whose vendors cover groceries, bakery, meat and fish, and prepared meals, open from 8 am every day of the week. If you want this week's field produce, the first is what you are looking for; if you want a weekday errand under one roof, the second is.

Beyond the city limits the county picks up the rest of the season. The Amherstburg Farmers Market is hosted at GL Heritage Brewing Co. on Howard Avenue and runs Sundays from 12:30 to 4:30 pm between 8 June and 26 October — though the market's own pages describe it as both weekly and monthly, so it is worth checking before you drive out. Kingsville's Willow Tree Market and County Bounty in LaSalle round out the set, and both sit on Food Web's map of the region.

It is worth knowing which kind of market you are standing in. At a producer market the person behind the table generally grew or made what is on it, and asking whether they grew it is a normal question rather than a rude one. At a market hall the vendors are retailers — which is not a lesser thing, it is how you get fish, cheese and bread in one trip in February — but the provenance question has a different answer there. Windsor has one of each, and both earn their place in a different week.

When and where is the Downtown Windsor Farmers' Market?

The downtown Windsor market runs every Saturday from 9 am to 2 pm, with the 2026 regular season starting 28 March and finishing 31 October. It sets up on Chatham Street East in the heart of downtown, a short walk from the riverfront, and the association describes the mix as farm fresh fruit, vegetables and produce alongside artisan food products, art exhibits and craft vendors. That last part matters for planning: this is a market you can treat as an outing rather than purely a grocery run.

Go early if you are shopping rather than browsing. A one-morning-a-week market concentrates everything into five hours, and the growers who bring the smallest volumes — the ones with the eight varieties of tomato rather than the one — are usually sold out well before the close. Bring cash as a fallback, bring your own bags, and if you want a specific crop, ask the week before when it is expected; Essex County's season is long but it is still a season.

How does Windsor-Essex's local food and grocer scene support these markets?

Food Web's Asset Map plots Windsor and Essex County's food businesses together, and the shape of the result is the useful part. Grocery retail accounts for most of what is mapped — supermarkets and independent grocers, clustered along Tecumseh, Wyandotte and Walker — while the producer side shows up mostly as farm stands scattered down the county roads rather than as market pitches. Windsor does its direct selling at the farm gate more than at the market square.

Farmers Markets, Farms and Grocers in Windsor and Essex County, Ontario

Markets, farm stands, growers, bakeries and grocers mapped across Windsor and Essex County.

The Downtown Windsor Farmers' Market sits on that map along with the Amherstburg market, Willow Tree Market in Kingsville and County Bounty in LaSalle, and around them the growers themselves: Wrightland Farm and North 42 Degrees at Harrow, Zavaros Farms outside Amherstburg, Sun Parlor Honey near Essex. The Windsor food map page keeps the same view with the entity list beside it. For a region that leans the other way — where buying direct means driving to the farm rather than meeting it downtown — compare our guide to farms near Ottawa.

If you are planning a trip rather than a shop, that map reads better as a loop than as a list. Most of the county's growers sit along the concession roads between Harrow, Kingsville and Leamington, within about forty minutes of downtown Windsor, and a Saturday that starts at the downtown market and runs south-east through the stands will cover more ground than any single market can. Check hours before you set off: a farm stand keeps the farm's hours, which means long days through harvest and nothing at all once the season closes.

Are you a Windsor food business selling at market?

A market table is where a lot of food businesses find their ceiling. Ontario draws a firm line between what may be made at home and what must be made in a permitted kitchen, and the week you start selling anything beyond low-risk shelf-stable goods is the week that line matters. Our guide to renting a commercial kitchen covers what an hourly or monthly agreement should include, and you can browse kitchens listed on Food Web — availability varies by city, so check rather than assume. If you are reading this for the other reason, our guide to food banks in Windsor, Ontario covers the emergency end of the same food system.

Frequently asked questions

What day is the Downtown Windsor Farmers' Market?
Saturdays, 9 am to 2 pm. The 2026 regular season runs from 28 March to 31 October, on Chatham Street East in downtown Windsor.
Is there a farmers market in Windsor in winter?
The downtown outdoor market closes at the end of October. The City Market at 1030 Walker Road is indoors and trades year-round, seven days a week, though it is a market hall of permanent vendors rather than a producer market.
Where can I buy direct from Essex County farms?
Mostly at the farms themselves. Roadside stands and on-farm shops around Harrow, Kingsville, Leamington and Amherstburg handle a large share of the region's direct selling, and they keep their own hours rather than a market's.
Is this the same as the market in Windsor, Nova Scotia?
No. This guide covers Windsor, Ontario, in Essex County across the river from Detroit. Windsor, Nova Scotia, is a separate town in the Annapolis Valley with its own market.
