Farmers Market Miramichi, NB: A Local Food Guide

Between them, the two markets give Miramichi a place to buy local food every Friday and Saturday. They also give the region's small growers, bakers and cooks a low-cost place to sell. This guide covers where each market is, what you'll find there, and how both fit into Miramichi's wider food scene.

Where are the farmers markets in Miramichi?

Miramichi's two farmers markets sit on opposite sides of the city. One is in the former town of Chatham, and the other is on the Newcastle side.

Water Street Farmers' Market (Chatham side)

The Water Street Farmers' Market is at 1 Ellis Street, in the Chatham Pioneer Seniors Building. That's at the corner of Ellis and Water Street, under the Centennial Bridge. It opens Saturdays, 9 a.m.–1 p.m. The hours match across the City of Miramichi's service directory, Buy Local NB and the National Farmers Union in New Brunswick.

The market is mainly indoors, and vendors set up outside the building in summer. CBC reported that Evelyn Fletcher and Mary Jane Hickey founded it in 1996, with the Chatham Senior Citizens Club as its landlord.

Newcastle Farmers' Market

The Newcastle Farmers' Market meets Fridays, 10 a.m.–2 p.m., at the Miramichi Eco Centre, 21 Cove Road, beside French Fort Cove. The NFU-NB listed that address for a market table it hosted in August 2026. Some older directory listings still show the market's previous home on King George Highway, so go by the Cove Road address. The market has seating inside and outdoor vendors in summer.

When are Miramichi's farmers markets open?

Both markets operate for most of the year, but the published seasons don't match. Buy Local NB lists both as year-round except January, while the NFU-NB's provincial market map gives a March-to-December season. Between late December and early March, check the market's page before you make the trip.

What's sold at Miramichi's farmers markets?

The NFU-NB's market map says Water Street vendors should make it, bake it or grow it. At both markets, the mix leans toward small local producers.

At Water Street, the City's directory lists in-season produce and bedding plants, local organic meats and poultry, and canned and pickled goods. It also lists baked goods, plus an on-site kitchen serving breakfast and Indian, Korean and Japanese food. Craft tables carry knitting, crochet, woodworking, pottery, handmade soap and quilts. One regular grower, Water Street Garlic & Greens, sells there on Saturdays.

At Newcastle, the NFU-NB's August 2026 listing names produce, meat and eggs, baked goods, preserves, honey and hive products, fudge and spices. Soaps, jewellery, books and paintings round it out. The City's directory adds gluten-free and diabetic baking, and meals to eat in or take out.

Neither list is unusual for a small Maritime market, and Statistics Canada's national figures put that in perspective: in 2020, 4,137 Canadian farms reported selling through farmers' markets, against 15,647 selling from on-site stands and farm gates. Markets matter to the producers who use them, but they are not where most direct farm sales happen.

How can you find more local food around Miramichi?

The two markets aren't the only way to buy directly from local producers. Two directories cover the rest of the region:

• The NFU-NB's map of New Brunswick farmers' markets lists markets by region, each with its days, hours, season and contact links. It also comes as a downloadable PDF.
• The Buy Local NB directory, run by the Conservation Council of New Brunswick, can be searched by category, including farms, farmers' markets, vegetables and meat. Its Miramichi farm listings show the farms recorded in the Miramichi area.

The two directories don't agree on every detail, such as the market seasons above. Treat them as a starting point, and confirm hours with the market or farm directly.

How does Miramichi's local food scene support food entrepreneurs?

Farmers markets are one part of a larger local food economy. Food Web's Asset Map records the rest around Miramichi, and the profile is weighted toward places that cook and sell food — restaurants, grocers and bakeries — with a long tail of records that have not yet been classified.

What stands out is the thinness behind the counter rather than in front of it. There is very little shared or community kitchen capacity on record here. For a food entrepreneur, a Saturday or Friday market table is often the first real test of a product. It's cheap, the feedback is immediate, and regular customers come back. Scaling up usually runs into the same constraint: kitchen space. Bakers, preserve makers and prepared-food vendors need to confirm what New Brunswick's food premises rules require of the kitchen they produce in — and because we have not been able to verify New Brunswick's licensing rules from a government source, the provincial Department of Health is the only reliable place to ask.

If you'd rather start at a market table, the Newcastle market's NFU-NB listing says new vendors are always being added. When CBC covered Water Street's 20th anniversary in 2016, its organisers said recruiting new vendors was key to the market's future. Neither source explains how to apply, so contact the market directly through its directory listing.
