Loaves & Fishes Community Kitchen

Loaves & Fishes is a community kitchen at 139 Charlotte Street in Sydney's north end, phone (902) 539-5182. It offers meals, food to take away and clothing, and says it is open daily to anyone in need. A group of concerned citizens started it in 1981 as a temporary measure. It is still running more than four decades later, operated by the Inner City Churches Loaves and Fishes Society with support from Feed Nova Scotia. Find Food lists it as a late-morning meal program, seven days a week.

The Salvation Army, Sydney

The Salvation Army's Sydney Community Church runs a food bank at 55 Inglis Street, phone (902) 562-1717. Find Food lists it as open on Tuesdays and Fridays. The listed times are unclear, so phone before making the trip.

St. Theresa's Food Bank

St. Theresa's Food Bank is listed at 7 High Street in Sydney, phone (902) 564-9235. Its Find Food entry says to call to confirm hours.

North Sydney Food Bank Society

Across the harbour, the North Sydney Food Bank Society is at 25 Wilkie Avenue, phone (902) 794-1104. In September 2026, Find Food lists it as open Tuesday 9 a.m.–12 p.m., Wednesday 1–3 p.m. and Thursday 9 a.m.–12 p.m. According to a Nova Scotia Power profile from August 2026, the society moved into a former elementary school in 2019. It now runs grocery, soup, clothing, garden and cooking programs there. In 2026 it also launched a points-based program that lets people choose their own groceries, much like shopping in a store.

How do I find the right food bank in Cape Breton?

Start with Feed Nova Scotia's Find Food tool. Enter a full address and a search radius in kilometres, then filter by “Food Bank” or “Meal / Snack Program”. Results appear on a map or as a list. Feed Nova Scotia has been the umbrella organisation for food banks across the province since 2002 and, by its own account, supports more than 130 member agencies, so the tool covers most of Cape Breton.

Two practical points make the search go better:

1. Each food bank works a little differently. Feed Nova Scotia describes its member agencies as independent and often volunteer-run. Days, hours and how often you can visit vary from place to place.
2. Call before you go. Several Sydney listings either tell you to call for hours or show times that are hard to read. A two-minute call saves a wasted trip.

If the queue feels longer than it used to, that is not an impression. Food Banks Canada recorded 43,421 visits to Nova Scotia food banks in March 2025 — 10.3% more than the year before and 69.4% more than in March 2019.
